If you haven’t already heard, technology research giant Gartner recently released its Market Guide for Data Preparation and we couldn’t be more pleased to be listed as a representative vendor, with recognition for our Foundation platform and data preparation tool, Prep, throughout.
With this year’s market guide, we found that Gartner had a different take on the market landscape compared with previous research in the data preparation market, which coincides with an enterprise need we’ve identified at TMMData and have been designing our platform to address all along.
The data preparation market moves beyond self-service
So what do we believe has changed? How they’re talking about “self-service.” This is Gartner’s second data prep-focused market guide, but this time it dropped “self-service” from its title completely. Self-service typically refers to features that offer simplified usability and functionality to users of all kinds – not just programmers or IT specialists – allowing them to take the process of exploring, cleaning and manipulating raw data into their own hands. Certainly, self-service tools have great value as they traditionally remove red tape and hurdles so that marketers and data analysts alike have a seamless and expedient means of drawing insights from internal and external data without having to lift their heads or involve other departments, like IT.
But in today’s digital landscape as data collections expand, data sources multiply and data integration across organizations becomes more complex, professionals need tools that expand past the needs of the stand-alone user and their individual use cases, and instead also consider the entire enterprise. With so many users taking advantage of data in their own silos, they need tools that ensure data collaboration, governance and exploration organization-wide, without harming or losing data in the process. Gartner recognizes, “The market for data preparation has now evolved from tools supporting only self-service use cases into platforms that enable data and analytics teams to build agile and searchable datasets at an enterprise scale for distributed content authors.”
Foundation’s enterprise-level data tools
Fortunately, TMMData has already been on top of this… really since our inception. Prep empowers users – no matter their technical level – to operationalize their own data without sacrificing the fundamental elements that ensure enterprise-level reliable data. And it’s all possible because Prep is just one part of the Foundation platform built to develop and sustain data governance systems, instill data security, and maintain a trustworthy data warehouse.
In other words, at TMMData, our data prep involves more than helping individuals combine and clean up spreadsheets to quickly run raw data for analysis. When users use Prep, the Foundation platform is simultaneously and consistently protecting the integrity and organizational usability of data. It’s why marketers and programmers alike find value in our tools, and it’s why our users can go to meetings without multiple versions of the truth because they are confident in consistent and accurate data across the enterprise. Notably, the market guide provides a list of capabilities offered by data preparation tools. TMMData was listed with all of the capabilities for Capabilities Supporting Information Governance and Stewardship; Capabilities to Support Metadata Management; Support for Diverse Data Sources; and Support for Data Transformation, Blending and Modeling Capabilities.
Keeping TMMData’s Foundation platform ahead of the curve
And we’re only getting started. Maintaining the integrity of data, on a full-scale enterprise level, while ensuring any user has access to easy-to-use data tools, has always been part of our DNA at TMMData. Gartner’s guide recommends users ask vendors about their plans to develop products that (1) expand past data prep capabilities, (2) include data science libraries, (3) incorporate more intuitive data preparation workflows, or (4) consider organization-wide data collaboration, among a number of other functionalities. The good news is our platform is already there, and we’re continuously perfecting it even further. Want to know more about how TMMData’s tools extend past traditional self-service offerings?
